Until 1881 West Virginia was the Trans-Allegheny region of Virginia. It chose to stay in the Union when the other Southern States succeeded during the Civil War. West Virginia is known for its beautiful Mountains and its coal-based economy. West Virginia also produces iron, steel, aluminum, machinery and electronic equipment as well as chemical production.
The state has a large number of State Parks as well as many ski resorts and historic places. West Virginia was active in the Underground railroad during the Civil War. Many people visit Harpers Ferry Historical Park every year.
